Good vision is essential in childhood development and regular eye tests are key to good vision.
Research shows that one in five children have an undetected eye problem. As 80% of a child’s learning occurs visually, it is vital that children can see well to reach their full potential at school and everyday childhood activities. A child may not realise if their vision is not clear-they assume the way they see is normal. Therefore, regular eye tests are advised for all children under the age of 16 at least once a year.
We are highly experienced and passionate about providing excellent eyecare for children in a friendly and comfortable manner. We use a range of different tests to check all aspects of a child’s vision.
When can my child have their first eye test?
We test children and babies of all ages, starting from around 6 months of ages. It doesn’t matter if your child is too young to talk or read, we use a range of different tests appropriate for their age. This indicates if there are any major signs of eye conditions and whether they need regular monitoring. It is important to detect any eye disease or vision problems in children and babies as early as possible in order to provide best management, quick referral and ultimately the best visual outcome for your child. That’s why we see babies and children as soon as parents have any concerns.
Typical warning signs to look out for are:
• Eyes pointing in different directions
• Closing one eye to see or read better
• Complaining of frequent headaches
• Problems reading for example, holding book closely or loosing place regularly
• Squinting or screwing up their eyes to see or siting too close to the television
• Being unusually clumsy especially at night or in the dark
• Problems with hand eye co-ordination for example, may struggle batting a ball
• Regularly rubbing eyes
• White pupil or white pupil reflex seen on photographs, this may require urgent medical attention
